Sharing the Road: Road Biking Safety

You know that feeling when you're on your bikes, enjoying the wind in your face and the sun on your skin? Biking is fun! But sometimes, biking can be fraught with danger. Whether it's from inattentive drivers or hazardous road conditions, cyclists need to be vigilant to stay safe. In this blog post, we'll share some tips on how to stay safe while road biking in Florida's favorite beaches.

General Bike Rules in Florida:

  • All bike riders or passengers under 16 years must wear a helmet.

  • No bicycle rider is allowed to wear headphones.

  • After dark, use a headlight, a tail light, and reflectors for visibility.

  • Bicyclists should look out for Sharrow pavement markings, where bicyclists and motorists should share the road.

  • Follow the rules of the road.

  • Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Use hand signals to communicate with drivers.

  • Use extra caution when riding near parked cars, as doors may open suddenly.

  • Be predictable and stay in control of your bike at all times.

The 30A cycling trail, also called the Timpoochee trail, is 18 miles from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach. This scenic bike path is fun to cycle and goes by the beautiful Rosemary Beach, Seaside, and Watercolor. To enjoy these in safety, observe the following road biking safety rules:

  • You should yield to pedestrians who have the right of way.

  • Allow pedestrians and other cyclists to pass you on the left

  • All furry friends (dogs) must be kept on a leash and walk on the biker's right-hand side.

When biking in Grayton Beach, here are additional basic safety precautions and road rules to follow:

- Cyclists should ride on the right side of the road

- Cyclists should use hand signals to indicate turns.

- Cyclists should never ride more than two abreast.

- Cyclists should always yield to pedestrians.

1. Bicycles are to be ridden on the right-hand side of the road.

2. Always ride with traffic, never against it.

3. Use hand gestures and signals to indicate turns and stops.

4. Obey all traffic laws, including stop signs and yield signs.

5. Always yield to pedestrians.

6. Ride in a straight line, and do not swerve in and out of

parking spaces or between parked cars.

9. Wear bright clothing, and use reflectors or lights when

riding at night.

10. Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
